● Absolutist definitions of deviance -

● Absolutism Deviance - argues that an act or behavior is always wrong, no matter the
circumstances
● Relativism Deviance - most actions/behaviors are sometimes acceptable and sometimes
not acceptable, depends on the situation
Why do People Deviate?:
● Strain Theory - problems with social structures create blocked pathways for individuals
● Socialization Theory - deviance is the product of being in or being raised in a deviant
social environment
