Nonverbal communication includes: the use of space, body language, use of touch, paralanguage, use of time, smell/odor, appearance and dress. Research has shown that there is a degree of universality concerning some nonverbal communication. For example, all cultures have nonverbal ways of expressing sadness or fear. However the rules" governing the displays of nonverbakl communication vary across cultures and are learned through socialization. Verbal and nonverbal communication are often happening simultaneously and are inextricably intertwined. Cognitive content is conveyed through the verbal part of a message: effective content is conveyed through the nonverbal component. If the nonverbal message contradicts the verbal, the nonverbal message is given greater credence because nonverbal messages perceived as less conscious and therefore more honest. Verbal codes are based on symbols and nonverbal are based on signs and signals.
