have been given to blacks but in general whites have superiorities. Whereas in south-
slavery is still legal so they generally overall have more power than African Americans

Dubois argues that the era of reconstruction did not achieve what it had to achieve
leading to the rise of Jim Crow.
Research question: is there evidence of an ongoing racial tyranny of the majority?
Main argument: Jim crow laws (1892-1965) perpetuated racial tyranny of the white
majority via political, economic and social exclusion.
Black Codes (1865-1877)
- Blacks codes are the laws are part of the larger pattern of suppression from the
southern whites on blacks.

- Pless ought a first lass trai tiket o a Whites ol trai ad as asked to
leave but he argued that they were taking away his 13th and 14th amendment rights.

together with the grandfather clauses- if you could prove that your
grandfather voted prior to the abolishment of slavery- you would be
exempted from the tax
o Grandfather Clauses-
These tests were confusing and time consuming and if you were
illiterate white male, if you proved your grandfather votes prior to the
abolishment of slavery- you did not have to take the test and you
could vote.
o Intimidation
when these did not work, the old communities went to threats and
violent forms of it and threats of losing your job. Many instances local
police were suppressing the blacks from voting
- Labor and land ownership
o Sharecropping
Croppers= forced labor
- Criminal justice
