Document Summary

As he gained more experience he rejected some of his early views from the federalist papers. His views were awed in 3 serious ways: his idea that increased size reduces the dangers of factions is contradicted. 2: he actively supported giving slave states increased representation. Madison wanted govt by the people=> a revolutionary. With using the standards of today- when he went to the convention and wrote the federalist in his conception of basic rights he excluded over half of the population papers, he wasn"t much of a democrat. Then he created institutions for people to self-govern=> more democratic. He drew up the essentials of the virginia plan for the constitution. Needed to combine republic and democracy=> no name for it, his distinction was arbitrary, founders wanted to create a republic, not a democracy, we are not a democratic republic. => bill of rights: federalism, constitution of limited enumerated powers, election of representatives, enlarge the size of the republic.
