MC 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Progressive Era, Moral Authority, Protestantism
Document Summary
Equality of social conditions alters the relationship between citizens: you can see the effect if this on families. Parental authority has been modi ed: no longer an unposed dictatorship by the father. No period of adolescence: the father surrenders easily. Concept of superiority becomes weaker and indistinct. Custom forces men closer together and puts them on the same level. Father is the tie between the past and the present. In democracies- don"t go based on precedent. As aristocratic power decreases, the power of parents decreases. Democracy=> the relationship between father and son is kinder. Aristocracy=> the oldest brother becomes the master of the younger ones. Aristocracy binds family but not necessarily by heart: democracy is different. Democracy loosens social ties but strengthens natural ones. In protestant nations girls are more in control of their behaviors. Girls are left to look after themselves. Long before marriage girl emancipates from men=> thinks for self and speaks freely.
