PSY 101 Lecture 12: 02/19 Learning
Document Summary
The initial stage of learning when a neutral stimulus is linked to an unconditioned stimulus so that the neutral stimulus begins triggering the conditioned response. Thus, making the neutral stimulus a conditioned stimulus. The diminished (weakened) responding that occurs when the conditioned stimulus no longer signals an upcoming unconditioned stimulus. Repeated presentation of the cs without the us causes the cs to no longer elicit the cr. The reappearance of a weakened conditioned response after a pause. The learned ability to discriminate between a conditioned stimulus and stimuli that do not signal an unconditioned stimulus. Ex. a slightly different tone doesn"t allow a dog to salivate, or differentiating different children"s" cries. The tendency, once a response has been conditioned, for stimuli similar to the conditioned stimulus (cs) to elicit similar responses (cr). Ex. touching a dog"s thigh and feeding it. John garcia discovered that organisms are predisposed to learn associations that help them adapt and survive.
