We are using scientific methods to study things that are typically outside of science (is psych a science? yes) Usefulness of psychology: half of you will have a diagnosable mental illness. Women depression and eating disorders: most of you already know someone with a mental illness or have one, most of you will: 2 homework assignments: each worth 10 points. Research participation: 15 half-hour credits, each worth 2 points, see info sheet. People were presented with 504 nouns: 3 sessions on 3 successive days, 168 words per session. Task: generate an associate for each noun: 1-associate condition: car drive, 3-associate condition: car drive, fast, crash. Memory test given right after session 3: incidental: people didn"t know is was coming, people were given retrieval cues either their own or someone else"s. Before class: glance over chapter headings and previews.
