Evolutionary changes solve problems in the environment (of adaptedness) in which the problem arises. Disconnect between ancestral and modern environments may be partly responsible for psychopathology. Invites introspection/self-reflection which can lead to dark thoughts. The processes involved are maladaptive and not in the individual"s best interest. The processes represents deviance from both cultural and statistical norms. The person has difficulty connecting with his or her environment and also with himself or herself. The affected psychological processes are rigid and patterned, leading to limited awareness of alternatives, and to a loss of freedom in any given situation. Ancient greeks viewed the world in terms of elements and humors. Pioneering anatomical work lead to early descriptions of the brain and cranial nerves. Champion of empiricism (the significance of direct observation) Documented the senses, movement, and some limbic (fight or flight) activities. Description of natural, vital, aand animal spirits: precursor to hormones. Galileo led the movement towards an experimental approach.
