Document Summary

Study of heredity: dna controls heredity traits. Dna is the genetic material: proved by alfred hershey and martha chase. Nucleotides: building blocks of dna & rna: nucleotides have three parts, nitrogenous base (different types, five carbon sugar, phosphate group. Dna has four different nitrogen bases: thymine (t) and cytosine (c) pyrimidines (single ring, adenine (a) and guanine (g) purines (double ring) Each nitrogen base attaches to a 5 carbon sugar. Hydrogen bonds between nitrogen bases: a, t = 2 bonds, c, g = 3 bonds, both known as complimentary base pairing. Rosalind franlin: first produced x-ray image of dna. Watson, crick, wilkins- noble prize in 1962 for structure model of dna. Consists of: nitrogen bases, adenine, uracil (no thymine, cytosine, guanine, ribose sugar, phosphate group. Rna is single stranded, no complementary bonding with another dna strand. Different kinds of rna: messenger rna, transfer rna, ribosomal rna. Semiconservative model; parent splits, two new daughter replace: one old strand, one new strand.
