Make sure production is unified, everything is put together. Place actors on stage and move them around. Script serving directors: bring playwrights vision to life, translates playwrights opinions and ideas, don"t put in their own ideas. Au tore directors: have a very strong visual style, superimposes their own ideas, don"t care about playwright"s ideas. Half directors: mix of both script serving and au tore, find own artistic vision to highlight playwright"s vision. Choosing a play to direct: choose what you"re interested in, sometimes they don"t get to choose, do it because it"s a challenge, do it for the money. Analyze play"s themes, characters, and history: because director is in charge at practices. Pre-production period: process before casting, have design meetings with designers, decide on concept/approach they"re going to take, design elements are done by end of process. Actor fits role as described: nontraditional casting. Gender-blind, color-blind, age-blind: each type works for different plays, hardest part of casting.
