By the 1920 city population surpasses rural population. 6 million african american migrants arrived from rural south. Numbers rise to around 2 bedrooms apartments/floors. Indirect sunlight and ventilation for most rooms. Illegal air shafts help bring in indirect light. Jacob riis: photographer, used printed media for a social cause. Illustrations in harpers weekly used for a social cause.
