BIO_SC 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Bioremediation, Hyperthermophile, Decomposer
Document Summary
All life is categorized into one of 3 domains: Many bacteria can live inside living organisms without issue. Pathogens: bacteria or other organisms that cause disease. Causes symptoms like fever, aches, rashes (often due to immune response to infection) Some pathogens also release toxins that can cause more severe illness (even death) Autotrophs: make their own food from material in nonliving environment. Heterotrophs: rely on other organisms as a food source. Bioremediation: use of organisms to remove pollutants from water, air, or soil. extremeophiles -- most live in extreme environments, but some do not. Lack vasculature (specialized tissues for transport & provides stability which allow plants to grow larger) Secrete powerful enzymes into their food that decompose complex molecules into simpler compounds that the fungus can absorb. Decomposers -- digest & use organic molecules in dead organisms as sources of nutrients & energy. Left and right halves that are mirror images. Allows for adaption for seeking food, prey, etc.
