Document Summary

Conservation of energy: principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but is transformed from one form to another. Potential energy: energy of an object because of its location or structure. An object on the table is going to have more potential energy than an object on the ground. Heat energy: kinetic energy generated by the random movements of atoms. Chemical energy: potential energy stored in the bonds of molecules that can be released by chemical reactions. A series of energy conversions are used to power a system (cells, humans, guns, etc. ) All energy conversions generate some heat, no matter what type of energy you"re moving to. Heat energy is chaotic and disordered, usually lost from the system. Energy from food calorie: unit of energy in food. Amount of energy that can raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree celsius. The calories on food labels (capital c) are actually kilocalories (1,000) calories.
