Document Summary
There is no fda approved medication for exclusive use with stuttering. The most often and recently studied pharmacological agents for stuttering are dopamine antagonists (decreasing dopamine in the. Dopamine is neurotransmitter that helps regulate motor movement (parkinsonism lacks dopamine) Dopamine antagonists are sometimes used to treat tourette"s syndrome and schizophrenia. Since late 90"s, it"s been hypothesized that stuttering may be associated with dopamine hyperactivity. Several brain imaging studies have supported activity in the basal ganglia during stuttering (fox et all, 1996) The basal ganglia is rich with dopamine reception. Part ii review of pharmacological treatments for stuttering (1970-2005) using similar criteria as part i analysis for behavioral treatments. Medications examined included everything from anticonvulsants, beta- blockers, to ssris and haloperidol (dopamine regulating-most studied for stuttering) 31 studies were identified for analysis against 5 methodological criteria. Trial quality was adjusted since no studies met more than 3 criteria.
