Assignment in early october go to 1 or 2 lectures from a greek historian. Hebrews differ from other ancient religions: actual monotheism and can be no other gods, god is above and outside nature. Created the universe but is beyond it. Other deities were part of nature (mountains were god, wind was god, etc. : to the hebrews, the only thing in nature that had god in it was. Man (made in his image: god is benevolent, god makes covenant with man. If you do these things, i will do these. Consistency: not fickle like mesopotamian gods. Also serves as political ideology: makes hebrews the nation", also keeps people civil", fully sovereign. Other deities were subject to fate, punishment, death, etc. Eden: marks the beginning of hebrew"s history of man, gives the world suffering and original sin. We are all children of adam: born flawed , adam and eve have free will and chose to sin.
