Document Summary

Describe the functions of specific bacterial structures and their roles in pathogenesis. Know the structures that are targeted by antibiotics. Single celled microbes can belong to any of the three domains of life ex. eukarya, archea, bacteria, Just because you are a single celled does not mean you are a bacteria. Bacterial cell morph: spherical cells (coccus, cocci) Sphere or short rod: rod shaped (bacillus, bacilli) Forms within a cell; not a form of replication. Each endospore germinates to form one vegetative cell. Can germinate and produce regular bacteria and undergo binary fission. Extremely resistant to drying, heat, radiation and disinfectants. When you wash purple away-it easily goes away. Gram stain not used for: atypical cell walls. Waxy later on the outside that stops the strain from getting in. Acid-fast bacteria (afb) resist decolorization with acid-alcohol and stain red, the color of the initial stain, carbol fuchsin. Other bacteria will be decolorized and stain blue with counterstain methylene blue ex.
