Document Summary
Discussion: review of the republic (books 1 & 2) 9-1-16. Objection: returning a weapon to an angry friend. Justice gives benefits to friends and harms to enemies. Objection: friends might be bad people and enemies might be good. Justice is the actions that serve the stronger. Objection: servant gives master a cup because he asks for it, but the servant knows there will be a bad outcome (poison) --- either way the servant will obey and disobey him. Justice harms the individual acting just but benefits the person acted just towards. Being unjust and stealing will allow you to come out ahead -- unjust life may be better. Being just will make you feel good -- just life may be better. Intrinsic/extrinsic - both value within itself and its consequences (health) Extrinsic - only valuable for its consequences (exercise, studying, medial treatment, money)
