PSYCH 2320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Parachuting
Document Summary
The person-situation debate, continued 2: self monitoring (mark snyder) Some people are more in tune to situations than others. A high self monitor = someone who is always looking to situation to maximize the benefits. A low self monitor = someone who primarily bases his or her behavior on internal thoughts and feelings. Personality should predict behavior for low but not high self monitors. Research does support the idea that low self monitors are more likely to show consistency across situations. Predicting a very specific behavior from a very broad trait makes no sense. The two variables have to correspond in terms of their level of generality. If we want to predict behavior from personality we need to match them up . We could make personality very specific and momentary (like mischel wanted to do) If we want to get a general, broad measure of behavior we should measures a variety of behaviors over time.
