REL_ST 2110 Lecture 14: Christianity Notes
Document Summary
Founder: jesus? bc he didn"t plan to found a new religion. Jesus was born, raised, taught, lived, and died a poor galilean jew. Jesus"s teachings, discussions, arguments almost entirely w other jews about jewish issues: how to interpret and follow god"s law. Message was one of apocalyptic warning: repent! Apocalyptic: end of world is coming near--be ready! Executed as a political dissident by romans (politically dangerous--nonreligious cause) Galilee: a small, poor village in the countryside--nothing important. Diff regions w diff rules, but all under roman empire. Educated jew from greco-roman city (maybe tarsus) Originally hostile to jesus"s followers in synagogue communities. Became an ardent follower of jesus; apocalyptic vision fulfilled. Did not meet jesus personally, but talked to him thru a vision. Defines faith in jesus as faith in redemptive power of jesus"s death/resurrection. Set up house-churches, moved on, stayed in contact via letters. Not the only christian apostle, but most successful.
