Unit 2 – 2/24/2014 SOCIALIZATION Socialization is the process by which we are taught by influential members the norm and  expectations that society holds for individuals 5 Main Sources of Socialization: 1. Parents or Family ­The first to begin the process of socialization ­Provides basic needs, and teaches children skills, cultural values, and  attitudes 2. Peers ­Provide the opportunity to develop and experience relationships outside  the family ­Such relationships allow for identities to be formed a part from one’s  family ­ Strongly influence one’s socialization process and sometimes more so  than one’s parents 3. Schools ­Schools teach us values and customs associated with
