SOCIOL 1650 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Queer Theory, Intersectionality, Heterosexuality
Document Summary
Intersectionality, the notion that more than one dimension of difference can be present when examining deviance can be explained by many examples given in class. Two examples that would work well to explain intersectionality would be the example of the short film boy we watched in class and the blind and taub discussion of the women athletes who were lesbians. Both examples display intersectionality by deviance of gender and sexuality. The short film boy portrayed a girl, named emilie, who felt as if she were in the wrong body and secretly wanted to be a man. She lived in a middle class home with her mother who wanted everything to seem perfect. The short film starts out in a clothing store. It shows emilie looking through the men"s section, when suddenly her mom comes over with a dress. Emilie tries to tell her mom she doesn"t want to wear a dress.
