Unemployed: someone who is not currently at work who is available for work and who has actively looked for wok during the previous month. Do not have a job for the past 4 weeks but, Discouraged workers: people who are available for work, but have not looked for work during a previous month because they believe no jobs are there for them. Unemployment rate: (number of unemployed / labor force) x 100 = unemployment rate. Labor force participation & employment-population (labor force / working-age population) x 100 = labor force participation rate (employment / working-age population) x 100 = employment-population. The unemployment rate is not a perfect measure by the bls.
