Verde Valley Regional Swat – Purpose, function, capabilities
Primary Mission
• The preservation of human life
o The mission of Police in general is the protection of life and property
o SWAT provides an additional tool for incident commanders to utilize to help
ensure the primary mission is successful
What is SWAT?
• Special
• Weapon
• And
• Tactics
o Very simply put the name sums it up rather well SWAT is special weapons and
tactics. It is specialty trained Officers equipped with additional tools to perform
tasks that are more complicated or higher risk than what Patrol is equipped and
trained for.
Verde Valley Regional SWAT
• Cottonwood Police is the hosting agency for the Regional team made up of
o 12 team members
o From 4 Verde Valley Agencies
▪ Cottonwood PD
▪ Sedona PD
▪ Camp Verde Marshall’s Office
▪ Cottonwood Fire Dept.
Why Regionalized SWAT?
• SWAT has become an essential tool for modern Law Enforcement
• Has become a required industry standard for many types of situations
• Smaller communities often have trouble maintaining a fully functional team with the
often limited resources they have
• By combing resources in a cooperative effort by serval agencies we can have the
advanced capability of a SWAT team readily available to provide a higher degree of
service to our communities
• Participating agencies enjoy full benefits of the swat team

Training
• SWAT Operator
o Advanced tactics for high threat situations
o One to two weeks in duration
o Very demanding
▪ Mental
▪ Physically
o Covers all aspects of SWAT operations
• Once assigned to SWAT
o The team trains 10-20 hours each month
o This is in addition to all of their duties for their regular assignment
o PT test every 6 months
▪ In addition to dept PT test additional firearms training, additional firearms
qualification every six months
SWAT Operator selection
• Officers apply via letter of intent to Command staff
• Complete SWAT PT test
o Comprehensive test of a job related events coupled with fast paced run interval
and obstacles
o Interview by team Sergeant and team leaders
o After testing new team members begin a one yare period of training there are
bench marks which have to be completed during this year
Vehicles
• HUMVEE
o Used by team to transport people ad equipment, light weight, very agile, very
basic ad durable, on armored
• MRAP
o Mine resistive ambush protective, used to transport team members ad equipment,
armored, very agile for its size, additional capabilities, very durable, acquired
through DRMO
Technology
• SWAT uses equipment with advanced technology to provide added safety
• Cameras
• Throw plane
• Night vision
• Thermal Visio
• Communications
• Weapon mounted technology
o Laser/ reflect sights
Equipment
• SWAT utilizes specialized equipment to augment the speed and safety of our operation
• Shields
• Breaching entering tools
• Surveillance tools
