Document Summary
The american dream: strain theories, it is becoming harder and harder to enter the middle class, over the past few decades the middle class shrunk. The rise of extreme inequality: as the rich are getting richer, everyone else is getting left behind, poor getting poorer, major gains in the tope 5, top 5% and 10% have also done well. Just not as well: enabled by changes made in the 80s and 90s, median income stays the same. Declining wages: corporate profits go in a different direction then wages and salaries. Poll: the american dream is harder to reach today than it was a few decades ago: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree. Rising inequality: what has caused this level of inequality, globalization and technology, capitalism, deregulation, what is meritocracy threatened, you have to be born into wealth. Innovation: ritualism, retreatism, rebellion, the pressure of society creates a strain, can lead to deviance.
