ANS 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Outcrossing, Bedlington Terriers F.C., Basset Hound
Bones
• Living and dynamic organs
• Responsive to many nutritional, hormonal, and physical factors
• Develop and grow by ossification
• Gaps of non-ossified tissue between bones form sutures
o Doliocephalic: 270 ex: whippet
o Mesaticephalic: 235 ex: rotweiler
o Brachycephalic: 200 ex: Persian and Bulldog
Skeleton
• Support and storage
o Axial: skull, vertebrae, ribcage, sternum
▪ Skull = 30 bones
▪ Dog has 42 teeth, cat has 30
▪ Baby teeth come in at 6 weeks and are replaced by 6 months
▪ Vertebral Column = 33+ bones (Cervical 7, thoracic 13, lumbar 7, sacral 3, caudal
3-23) protects spinal cord and supports skull
▪ Ribcage = 13 pairs and protects main organs
o Appendicular: bones of limbs and pelvic girdle
▪ Pelvic Girdle: scapula (inability to bipedal)
▪ Brachium and antebrachium help with flexion in joints
▪ Carpus(wrist) and Manus(foot): first digit = dew claw
• Tendons: muscles to bone
• Ligaments: bone to bone
Coverings and Linings of the Body
• Protection: skin, scales, claws
• Chemical Exchange: lining of digestive tract, lungs, kidneys, thermoregulation
• Secretions: endocrine and exocrine
• Support: exoskeleton, wings
• Storage: pigment and excess food
• Sensory: eye and ear
Nutrition in Dogs
• Obesity is a major problem- 55% of dogs are obese
• Body Condition Score (1-9)
• Obese: 10-15% over optimal body weight
• Water: fresh, clean, ad lib
• Carbohydrates: 65-70% of diet
• Fat: at least 1% of diet, some may need up to 25-50% of diet for extreme cases
• Protein: 18-25% for adult and geriatric diets
• Fiber: 1-8% of diet
• Lactating dogs should have food ad lib
