ENG 208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Piet Mondrian, Norman Rockwell, Erik Satie
Document Summary
Results of world wars: high sense of nationality, psychological issues, darker tones in writing, communities being torn apart. Modernism: had intention of being darker/gloomier of being more realistic: not realistic in the usual sense of the term. Modern fiction, art, and music respond to these changing conditions in ways that try to communicate what is happening: on psychological, community, and global scale. Guy on left: maybe soldier, nostalgic, either hopeful for future or hopeless for young boy. Realistic: surface level, pleasant, warm, inviting. Picasso"s response to war: broken sword, woman holding supposedly dead figure, fragmented bodies, figure screaming in anguish, sharp lines. Modernism is about reflecting the loss of ideals, of religious/philosophical presumptions: it"s about reflecting the chaos of losing belief in all kinds of things. Can be related to stained glass: however, stained glass has some sort of image. In any kind of religion, there"s a foregrounding of solitude.
