ENT 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Apocrita, Pterodactylus, Myiasis
Document Summary
We used to be a crop state but are now more of a livestock state. Confined livestock i. e. hogs in hog houses and poultry in poultry houses. We grow plants in monocultures of resource they want. A monoculture is a large area of land only for one type of crop (like corn) This makes it easier for pests because they know the entire place has the type. Sunflowers are the only crop native to north america. Only 9 of 30+ insect orders have plant feeders. On an apple tree, the insects that eat the apples are direct pests. Affect other parts of the apple tree (like all of the leaves before the tree has finished making more apples. The pest population that causes damage equal in value to controlling that population. Below the threshold, we are wasting money by spending more money controlling the pest population than what the pests would take away from us.
