HI 233 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Quit India Movement, New Social Movements, Kwame Nkrumah
Document Summary
The two decades after world war ii saw the end of colonial empires. World war i and world war ii had large impacts on decolonization. During world war i, the colonies were mobilized into the war effort. During world war ii, the colonies were mobilized and it brought more industrialization, an industrial working class, and a growth of labor unions. As colonies were mobilized, it made it more difficult for them to reintegrate into society and tensions between the colonized and the colonizers over how these territories should be governed rose. New social movements grew, and educated leaders of independence movements drew on models to mobilize their people for independence. In 1939, when britain declared war on germany, they declared war on behalf of india without consulting indian leaders beforehand. In 1942, gandhi said it was not india"s responsibility to interfere in germany, so he launched the quit india movement.
