HI 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Kuraka, Charismatic Authority, Bourbon Reforms
Document Summary
Largest anti-colonial insurrection before the wars for independence. Enveloped contemporary peru, bolivia and parts of argentina, ecuador and colombia. Centuries of oppression of the native people. Worsening exploitation as a result of the bourbon reforms (especially as it concerned the expansion of the reparto and increased taxation) Pachacuti or the cyclical destruction of the world. Inkarri or the return of an indian savior king. The uprising was in fact a very loose confederation of three uprisings. One was led by tomas catari, a displaced illiterate aymara speaking indian curaca in the town of macha and in province of chayanta. All curacas in upper peru were mestizos by this time. Catari had reform in mind, but masses had more radical aims. Catari killed chataquila while being brought as a prisoner to la plata. Led to a brief and unsuccessful siege on the city of la plata by his relatives.
