Each person uses 100 gallons of water every day in the us. Philadelphia - the major industrial city in the united states back then. Served as a prototype for other major cities. Can cause waterborne diseases if not thrown away properly (cholera) Need to transport it to another spot. Boston built the first water sewer system in the us. Takes our filth and moves it out into the ocean . Combined system - carry waste water/ stormwater through the same pipe. not good anymore, leads to combined sewer overflow. Separate system - two pipe method, carries storm water away f/ the city. Our infrastructure is so old that it"s beginning to break and will fail. Diseases such as cholera or typhoid hurt us back then. But now we treat our drinking water and decreased the impact of waterborne diseases. Water infrastructure itself protects the treated water.
