Notes on a few middle eastern civil upheavals . Beginnings (17 december 2010): fruit vendor and college educated mohamed. Bouazizi, 26, set himself on fire in front of the provincial headquarters of sidi. Protest: widespread riots followed; stemming from public frustration with the rampant unemployment of tunisian youth, censorship of all media outlets, and corruption in the tunisian government. Police obstructed demonstrators using force which has only fueled the movement. End: ben ali and his family fled to malta under libyan protection on jan. 14th. He is now in exile in saudi arabia. Election of the constitutional assembly on 23 october 2011 (217 seats): ennahda (89 seats), congress for the republic -cpr (29 seats), 12 december 2011: m. marzouki elected by the assembly to serve as.
