Document Summary
Propinquity effect: the people you see and interact with the most are most likely to become your friends and lovers: experiment used to test this effect: Post-war housing shortages on campus so 17 buildings were created. Residents were assigned to 170 rooms on a first-come, first-serve basis not chosen. Researchers surveyed people who lived there and asked them to report who their 3 best friends were. Results showed that distance plays a role in friendship and formation: 65% indicated people who lived in the same building as them, 41% indicated close friends or next door neighbors, 21% indicated one door down. Maryland state police six week boot camp: Older study than the westgate housing project, but similar idea. All physical assignments were done by alphabetical order: people around those with nearby last name. At the end, cadets were asked to rank order best friends in group. There was a correlation between proximity of last name and ranking 0. 9.
