Lecture: ebbinghaus, 1st person to systematically study interference, discovered the forgetting curve, more forgetting happens early on, collected data from himself, forgetting: is it due to decay or to inference, due to interference. Showed people some data, but manipulated what happened between. More forgetting was seen on people who were awake during time in between learning and the test. Asleep: less interference due to lack of interaction with the world and memory consolidation during sleep: kinds of interference: Proactive interference (pi): prior information interferes with new information. Thinking of similar sounding words partial retrieval. Proper nouns are not tied to a specific meaning. Partial information is available: prospective memory, remembering to do something in the future, depends on retrospective memory, frontal lobe is important. Trouble in prospective memory is due to damage or alteration to the frontal lobe: types of prospective memory. Event-based: doing something when an event occurs.
