Biological psychology: the study of the cells and organs of the body, and the physical and chemical changes involved in behavior and mental processes. The nervous system"s three functions: input, processing, output. Input (from sensory neurons in the pns) External stimuli are converted into forms you can work with: Light waves are converted to electrical signals that you can make sense of. Vibrations are turned to sounds or touches. Chemicals are transformed into tastes or smells. You make sense of what is going on and can interpret the stimulation (via interneurons and other brain structures): You notice the sound of your friends voice. You respond to the stimuli and take action (via motor neurons) You listen to what your friend is saying. Your mouth waters as you notice the food cooking. Like other cells, neurons have a cell membrane, nucleus and mitochondria. Unlike other cells, neurons are specialized cells that send and receive signals.
