It easily can be argued that simulation is what is happening in the caves at lascaux, altamira, and chauvet. Performances, storytelling, and ritual are all attempts to simulate large-scale cultural systems, down to personal behaviors with the goal of increasing the survival of the individual and the group. Digital media, through the four properties, procedural, encyclopedic, participatory and spatial, increases the possibilities for simulating any number of scenarios, from scientific, mechanical to social and cultural dynamics. By altering the amounts of copper in one acid bath and the amount of zinc in a separate acid bath, the voltage produced in a battery is simulated. In the experiment simulated at left, the state of an atom of sodium, magnesium, aluminum, and silicon is altering by simulating the separation of an electron from the atoms. The simulation demonstrates the energy produced by the separation.
