Shared focus on information to give people more control over a wider range of human knowledge. As stated earlier, we will not focus deeply on the section covering the encyclopedic property of the digital medium. Chapter 8: the database model: strategies for segmentation and juxtaposition of information. There are a few topic areas that do build upon the areas we have previously discussed. These are worth covering, as they build a deeper understanding of important aspect concepts covered in the last chapters we reviewed. Semantic segmentation: semantic unit, chunking and encapsulation, granularity. Navigating and visualizing large databases: tree maps. Semiotics (also called semiotic studies; not to be confused with the saussurean tradition called semiology which is a part of semiotics) is the study of meaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication. This includes the study of signs and sign processes (semiosis), indication, designation, likeness, analogy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication.
