BIOL 1107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Chromosome, Reading Frame, Chromosomal Translocation
Document Summary
Any heritable change in the genetic material: inherited by offspring of the cells as well. Because the genome is much larger compared to dna virus. Which is more important: per cycle (somatic=cancer) or per generation (gametes=offspring= inducing genetic variability): ex. somatic cell mutation: region of white flower where cell mutated to have blue color. Only ones that can grow are the ones that can grow have resistance. they already had that mutation to allow it to grow = already resistant! totally random mutation, can be inherited. Ampicillin resistance: horizontal gene transfer, resistant bacteria + non-resistant bacteria, resistant can transfer a plasmid to help out the other bacteria. Organisms don"t decide to evolve: more likely to have a bad mutation than a good mutation. Sickle cell anemia: single base pair mutation (missense: nonsense mutations: prematurely adding a stop codon, insertion/deletion: frame shift mutation = non-sense mutation well (may end to a premature stop codon as well)
