The virus caused st. louis encephalitis, a mosquito-borne illness that attacks the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include flu-like symptoms, headaches, seizures, vomiting and drowsiness. The previous encephalitis outbreak in florida, in 1990, killed 100 people and sickened over 220. People were warned that the most critical hours were at dusk and during the nighttime hours, when mosquitos are active. Disney world closed their swimming pools and water parks at 7 p. m. and shut down all golf courses one hour before dusk.
