Genetics: the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. Molecular biology: the study of the formation, structure, and function of macromolecules essential to life, such as nucleic acids and proteins. 1860 mendel outlines rules governing segregation of traits: pea plants. 1869 miescher discovers dna as weak acid. 1870 fusion of nuclei in gamete cells observed. 1882 fleming describes chromosomes and chromosomal segregation (mitosis/meiosis) via microscopes. In the 1920s microscopic studies with special stains showed that dna is present in chromosomes. Used to think it was proteins now we know it is dna. At the time, scientists thought dna just provided structural stability to chromosomes. So early experiments had to show that dna was the molecule of heredity and that protein wasn"t.
