COMM 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Pragmatics
Document Summary
Four components of language: pragmatics - how language is used in specific situations to accomplish goals. Contextual rules the implicit communication rules that govern communication situations. Exigency: an imperfection marked by urgency, it is a defect, and obstacle, something waiting to be done, a thing which is other than it should be. The exigency is the reason for or the purpose of the communication. Audience: an audience consists only of those persons who are capable of being influenced by discourse and of being mediators of change. Constraints: constraints are made up of persons, events, objects, and relations which are parts of the situation because they have the power to constrain decision and action needed to modify the exigence. Identity influences language (dialect, lexical choice, grammar, and pronunciation) Media depi(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s a(cid:374)d (cid:858)pop(cid:859) ps(cid:455)(cid:272)holog(cid:455) ofte(cid:374) suggest that (cid:373)en and women communicate differently.
