-may cycle through 3 stages of identity development
•awareness of difference
•dissonance: how individuals feel about their own identity vs how others perceive
them
•sense they don’t fit in anywhere
-ex Hafu: means biracial in Japan, and it is not necessarily derogatory; but
gives an identity (despite resistance from individuals from all cultural
backgrounds)
Majority (everyone doesn’t go through all stages)
-unexamined identity
-acceptance
-resistance
-redefinition
-integration
Social & Cultural Identities
-gender and sexuality
•masculinity
•femininity
-these views differ between cultures and cultural constructs/definitions of what
is expected of males and females
•heterosexual and homosexual
