American values: capitalism, military- what we are exposed to on the media tells us that we need a huge defense industry for survival- that"s why there are no cuts on military spending basically ever. Should the military policy be to not intervene: who are we to say what is the right answer/not. We participate in communication rituals: we are expected to act in a certain way at events such as: inauguration speech: the next president will follow a certain genre/pattern in the speech, weddings, funerals etc. Everyone needs to play their role for the whole judicial system to work. That"s how our judicial system works here in the us the reason it hasn"t changed is we haven"t been able to think of a better way. Communication can also be used to resist (and reinforce) dominant culture: example: if someone puts out their hand, you"re expected to shake it.
