Why should we care what kinds of stories the news tells about crime: most important source of info about crime (90% of people, agenda setting function. If you keep hearing about crime on the news, you"re more likely to be concerned about it: in uences political opinions (in the types of stories) Incredibly loyal to party, good voter turnout. Invited corruption because people would stick with party no matter what, also give favors: progressive-era reforms. More people in the middle that need/want to be convinced. Public relations forms, sole purpose to spin stories that protect them: journalists. They need to participate in selling their story. Respect for authority - we aren"t being tough on crime. Balance needs - mid ground between bad people and social liberties-more focus on protection. Civil liberties under attack - need to be consistent with individual rights. Poverty causes crime - sociological factors, fundamental errors in the system (great society)
