Document Summary

Why should we care what kind of portrayals of crime and justice exist in popular media: if they matter, it must be because those images have some kind of effect/ impact on us. Not great research, but gets a lot of attention because feeds into moral panics. Not causal links, but very easy to do. We are directly affected- will mimic the behavior we see. More violent content in media than at any other point in history, yet one of the lowest violent points in history: would expect more violence. 10 main things: the model tackles social problems backwards. More violent people watch less tv: treats children as inadequate. More violent people watch less tv: assumptions are characterized by barely-concealed conservative ideology. Concerned with media that puts violence in a sociopolitical stance (disrespect authority, anti-patriotic or moves to change the system) Unpunished crime shows- bad moral example: inadequately de nes its own objects of study.
