Nutrition hs 1105 notes: nutrition and the scientific process. Study of frequency/pattern and causes of disease in human populations. Descriptive: describe risk factors and disease in population (cross sectional) Analytic: compare risk factors and disease patterns between groups (at individual level). Show a relationship, or association between 2 variables. Doesn"t show that one variable causes the other, causation is harder to prove. Positive correlation - not necessarily a desired outcome. May lead to design of further studies. Case control: one group who has a disease (cases) is compared to similar group who does not have the disease (controls) measure risk factors from the past. Cohort: 2 groups without disease who have different levels of risk factors measure disease development over time. Strength : direct relevance to human health - can lead to public health recommendations. Foods consist of complex mixtures of compounds. Lab based - animal studies, in vitro cell culture studies; human intervention - clinical trials.
