Assessed according to degree to which they emphasize collectivism or individualism, and the degree to which they are democratic or totalitarian. Usually totalitarian is associated with collectivism, and individualistic is associated with democracy- however there is a gray area in between. Collectivism- refers to a political system that stresses the primacy of collective goals over individual goals, needs of society> individual freedoms. Socialism- believe in public ownership of the means of production for the common good of society- rooted to karl marx (manage state-owned enterprise to benefit society as a whole, rather than individual capitalists) Communists- those who believe socialism can be achieved through revolution and totalitarian dictatorship (ex: north korea, cuba)
