MUST 1220 Lecture 24: Intro to Music Technology MIDI 3
Document Summary
Mode refers to the way a device is set to respond to midi messages. The midi specification defines 4 modes of operation. Midi mode change messages are a special class of control change message (controller numbers 120-127). Midi channel mode messages involve defining 2 possible states of 2 parameters. 4 controller numbers determine the 4 combinations possible with these 2 parameters: omni, off the device responds to messages on one channel only (controller 124, on the device responds to messages on any channel (controller 125) Mono: the device can only play 1 note at a time (controller 126) Poly: the device can play polyphonically (multiple notes simultaneously) (controller 127) An instrument responds polyphonically to midi messages on any channel meant for troubleshooting to make sure device is responding to midi messages. An instrument responded monophonically to messages on any channel. This mode has limited (if any) usefulness and is rarely (if ever) used.
