Timing The Pre-Release Marketing Of Your Record
● Always think about marketing - whether something cool is coming up or not
○ Especially when there isn’t anything coming up!
● Community building activities
○ Adding to your email list
○ Optimizing your web site

● Street Date = release
Long Lead Pre-Release Marketing (15-20 weeks out from Street Date)
● Budgeting, goals, and planning:
○ 20 weeks out: your budgeting plan should be ready
○ 18 weeks out: confirm the list price of the release
○ 17 weeks out: draft an overview marketing plan of the record
○ 16 weeks out: research specific marketing/budget ideas in regards to sales,
radio, press, touring, Internet, and promo materials
○ 15 weeks out: complete your final marketing plan
○ 15 weeks out: finalize your sales/distribution sheet draft
● Packaging elements:
○ Liner notes are good, along with album art.
○ 20 weeks out: hire a liner-note writer if necessary.
○ 19 weeks out: execute a publicity shoot (for cover images, as well as press-only
images)
○ 18 weeks out: gather liner notes and credits from the band
○ 17 weeks out: assemble the package copy text document for the designer
