Brae - Radio
CMJ/College Music Journal is the #1 source for the introduction of new music releases and
independent artists on the rise.
There are several publications that keep track of music getting played on the radio. These trade
publications are read by music directors who decide what music gets played. Program
directors, on the other hand, determine when and how often it gets played.

station.
● If a station is already playing your stuff, ask if they can help you get a show on campus
or in the local area.
● Always ask for on-air interviews!
● DMDS (Digital Media Distribution System) - the new way to send your promo content in
full broadcast quality to managed list of broadcasters, press, music directors, program
directors, and industry VIPs worldwide.
Best Time of the Year to Push Radio
● January - April
○ Many think this is the time to push indie releases, advertising on commercial
radio is cheapest, try to hop on the spring break train.
● May - August
○ Easy and good for college radio as it’s in a slump cause summer, even though
some radios shut down, most are up and running and the students who are gone
for the summer still tune in.
● September - December
○ This is the best time to work radio in order to sell lots of records for commercial
radio if you’re big/apart of a larger label. It’s hard to get through to colleges cause
there’s such an influx of people wanting their music to be heard.
