POLS 1160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Economic Globalization, Feminist Theory, Proletariat
Document Summary
Marxists and feminists believe that the purpose of theorizing is to change the world. A normative theory is one that explains how the world should be, and how people should act, not how things actually are. Marxists adopt a holistic approach to theorizing: marxism states that historical materialism (economics) drives all historical change. This theory has been criticized for reducing all historical events down to economics. Marxists are concerned about and critical of economic globalization. Capitalism consists of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The proletariat are the working class and the bourgeoisie are the white collar class: marxists claim that exploitation is inherent to ensure proit, marxists also claim that conlict is inevitable between classes due to this exploitation. Imperialism allows the bourgeoisie to ease exploitation on their own working class by further exploiting the proletariat classes in other countries. Dependency theory: states operate to further the interests of the bourgeoisie.
